On offer a softcover “Steam Over Woodhead”, by E.M. Johnson, signed to the title page by the author E.M. Johnson
“The book complements Part 1 of Eddie Johnson’s Scenes from the Past 29 and provides extensive coverage of the Fallowfield line together with a deserved, fuller coverage of Gorton works and shed. Guide Bridge and the complex arrangement of lines into, out of and avoiding the station receive a detailed analysis. My impression is that the book contains more text, covering a wider variety of aspects of the operations to the south and east of Manchester than does Part 1. This enables the author’s knowledge of the former GC route to provide breadth as well as depth to his work. Having said that, it is far from being a “dry” book as Mr. Johnson’s warm affection for the men, machines and infrastructure on the route is clearly evident.
As you might expect from a Book Law/Foxline publication there are many good-quality photographs included. There is a good balance between the pre-grouping, post-grouping and nationalised eras with a comprehensive range of locomotives from the shiny ex-Gorton works engines, through B1s and K3s busily plying their trade, to the ubiquitous, grimy O4s hauling yet more coal wagons along the route.
In summary, Part 4 pulls together large chunks of the complex network of routes associated with the Woodhead line out of Manchester. More detail is provided, more first-hand experiences from railwaymen are included and more atmospheric photographs stir the memories of a wonderful route”. Southernsoftee 2014 review
The book is in a very good condition and has been read, priced on the rear cover £23.99
