” A meeting will be held on Monday. 3 March, in the Glasgow Academy, Elmbank Street Glasgow at Half-past Four o’clock (immediately after the conclusion of the International Match), to consider the propriety of forming a Football Union in Scotland on a similar basis to the Rugby Union in England. All Members of Clubs playing the Rugby Union Rules are invited to attend.”

This brief announcement in the Edinburgh and Glasgow papers of 1873 sparked of an enthusiastic response, and was to lead to the formation of the Scottish Football Union.

Over a century after that first meeting, the Scottish Rugby Union decided to commission this Official History in order to provide a unique record of the game in Scotland.
