This cover commemorates the Encounter of HMS Petard with German Submarine U-559 which was carrying the Enigma codebooks which needed to be retrieved before the U-Boat was scuttled.
1st Lieutenant Antony Fasson and Able Seaman Colin Grazier dived into the choppy sea and were joined by Canteen Assistant Tommy Brown . After recovering their goal Tommy Brown was the only survivor as the U-boat suddenly sank . The two men who were lost were posthumously award a George Cross and Tommy Brown ( a non-combatant) was awarded the George medal but died in a fire at his home before he could retrieve it
The codebooks were the decisive factor in the final cracking of the Enigma U-boat code at Bletchley Park.
