Hampden Park In a city like Glasgow which has produced an astonishing array of architects and engineers of world rank, from Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson to Sir William Arrol (who built the Forth Bridge,
Tower Bridge, London and the Chain Bridge in Budapest, among other achievements), the name of Archibald Leitch (1866-1939) may not be so well known, but he was both architect and engineer, and combined extraordinary talents in both fields to become the doyen of football construction. He was responsible for the stands of the Old Firm, Rangers and Celtic, but without doubt his greatest masterpiece was the mighty Hampden Park Stadium on the slopes of Mount Florida on the south side of Glasgow, laid out in 1903. This was by far the largest and most technically advanced stadium in the world and was immediately adopted as Scotland’s National Stadium.
